Defense: legacy primes are buying stakes in AI start-ups rather than building alone
$4.1B in defense-contractor-led funding rounds in 2026 (a record): Lockheed Martin grew its venture fund from $400M to $1B, BAE Systems committed €50M to two European funds, Airbus anchored a new €500M dual-use fund. Primes are buying optionality on AI rather than building it alone.
According to data cited in early August 2026 by law firm White & Case and analytics firm TMX VettaFi (via OilPrice.com), defense-contractor-led venture funding rounds reached a record $4.1B in 2026. Lockheed Martin expanded its internal venture fund from $400M to $1B and pledged at least $100M for UK and European defense start-ups. BAE Systems committed €50M to two European venture funds, while Airbus is the anchor investor in a new €500M dual-use technology fund.
These commitments are fueling headline raises: German drone maker Quantum Systems raised $1.2B at roughly an $8B valuation, and UK maritime defense firm Kraken Technology, backed by Rheinmetall, raised $175M at a $1B valuation. In parallel, 42 defense M&A deals were completed globally in H1 2026, a 56% year-over-year increase.
"The race to acquire and invest in defence technology is intensifying," says Daniel Turgel, co-head of White & Case's global technology industry group, pointing to AI, autonomous systems and cybersecurity as the drivers. Axel Belorde (TMX VettaFi) puts it more starkly: "data is going to win wars" — a shift in value from hardware toward software and data that legacy primes are racing to capture without waiting on their own, structurally slower internal R&D cycles.
The choice of minority venture stakes over in-house development or outright acquisition is not incidental: it lets primes position across several competing technologies without fully committing to any one of them before technological uncertainty resolves. The companion analysis develops this mechanism through an economist's lens.
