Textron and Merlin unveil the SkyCourier UX, an uncrewed freighter for contested defense logistics

Textron Aviation and Merlin, Inc. introduced the SkyCourier UX concept on September 14 at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland: a pilotless variant of the Cessna SkyCourier, a twin-engine turboprop powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-65SC engines and FAA type-certified since March 2022. The aircraft carries up to roughly 6,000 pounds of cargo across three LD3 containers, offers 884 cubic feet of cargo volume and a 940 nautical mile range, and can operate from austere, unimproved airstrips.

The partnership combines two distinct layers: Textron Aviation supplies the certified airframe and its Garmin G1000 NXi avionics, while Merlin contributes Merlin Pilot, an autonomy software the company describes as aircraft-agnostic and already demonstrated on other aircraft types. The stated goal is to make the SkyCourier UX capable of autonomous cargo operations rather than designing an uncrewed aircraft from a blank sheet.

The intended use cases are explicitly military: hub-to-spoke distribution across a theater of operations, resupplying expeditionary bases, delivering mission-critical repair parts and medical supplies to remote or island airfields, and above all a credible alternative when traditional supply routes — manned airlift, sealift or ground convoy — are constrained, saturated or exposed to an adversary.
